Avalanche

Sometimes it takes an avalanche
wake up my senses
40,000,000 cubic feet of snow
Ramming into my thick skull
it’s icy cold and demanding realities:
The day is only as long
as the Earth intends for it to be

Sometimes it takes a tsunami
fierce determination
might be my secret name
Pouring through my mind’s streets
destroy once-secure buildings
homes to my greatest assumptions:
I am alone, I have to struggle, you are gone.

Sometimes it takes an invitation
a hand offered subtly towards me
Calmly welcoming me home
to a place I’ve never known
Resisting old patterns
deliberation and intention,
She makes herself apparent once more:
“I love you”
suddenly became easy to say.
