The Upside/Down Government of You

Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius once said, “You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” While he was talking about what happens around you, Heartspace is within you as the engine of engagement. You have control over what you are sustainably connected to within you and around you – nobody else. Realize this, and you will find you.

The upside/down government of you often tells you the world around you controls you. That is challenging you everyday of your life. Throughout your day you look to your job, your family, your friends, and circumstances to change your life. When you get stressed you work out too much, you eat too much or too little, you drink alcohol or smoke, stay up too late or play too hard. All of these things are outside approaches to inside problems. In the same way, the muscle you pulled the other day, that headache that incapacitated you for a week, and the slipped disks that have caused you pain for months are also outside reflections of inside issues. All this is related, governed by you, and fully responsible to your connections within yourself and the world around you.

Every external thing in your world is the appearance of an internal thing within you. That external thing is an engagement that you have right now, one that is so sustained that it makes itself known in your daily life as well as within you. This is the mirror: Our outsides show what’s going on in our insides. If you look at the world and see anger and greed, Hearspace is calling you to become calm and giving. Hermann Hesse wrote, “If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is part of yourself. What isn’t part of ourselves doesn’t disturb us.” In that same way, if your relationships with others seem anemic and unfulfilled, Hearspace wants you to plant new seeds, grow, water, and weed, and harvest a bountiful crop.

Vote in a new government of you, one that goes from the inside to the out. That is operating from Heartspace.
