In Youth Participation For Educational Reformin Low-Income Communities Of Color, Barry Checkoway and Katie Richards-Schuster of the School of Social Work at the University of Minnesota cited me several times.
Someone who is ironically anonymous has posted a blog called “To Hell With Good Intentions”, and in a post called “for ALL people” he critically analyzes the “Ladder of Volunteer Participation” I posted to The Freechild Project website in the early 2000s. He does a thoroughly peripheral critique, both challenging the nature of the Ladder while complimenting my efforts overall.
David Truss, in his paper called Developing an Effective Middle School Leadership Program, reflects extensively on my Frameworks for Meaningful Student Involvement. While it was originally finished in 2006, I just found it again.
In the “using our work without citing us” realm, The Michigan Department of Education has published a broad sheet on Meaningful Student Involvement and its usage in Coordinated School Health, much of it drawn directly from my writing. I will be contacting them soon.

In 2011, Lois Collins interviewed me for an article in the Deseret News called, “Youth engagement opportunities abound to teach kids about activism, philanthropy, service“. She did a great job, and used quite a bit of what I said. Commenters on the article? Well, that’s another story…
Finally, last year I was cited in a post called “Students Aren’t Widgets“. I wrote, “The single problem plaguing all students in all schools everywhere is the crisis of disconnection. … Meaningful Student Involvement happens when the roles of students are actively re-aligned from being the passive recipients of schools to becoming active partners throughout the educational process.”
