Remember Holy Places

Cresting a saddle
between two peaks
I came upon a lake

Absolutely clear
I saw bottom-soaked logs
small fish darting

Surrounded
shale on mountainsides
tall guardian trees on three sides

A worship house without a name.

I couldn’t remember
the name
of this holy place

Cresting the hard times
between you and I
we came to a smooth spot

Absolutely clear
I could see our flaws
little neuroces darting between us

Surrounded
friends, family on all sides
too tall mountaintops

When you saw me
you couldn’t remember
this holy place

What was left when it was done.
