A Flu

One

one billion
hunger, toil
the scourge of First World
affluence
we eschew
inconvenient images
then prescribe ways out
we’ve never tried

love for fellows
isn’t handouts
donations
or prescriptions
its interior resonance
the sounds of one
billion
hearts alive tonight

No resistance is strong enough
none die in futility
no innocents in war
though everyone is innocent
bullets dismiss lovers
deny family, deplete youth
disturb truth
relinquish freedoms
expand nothing
